1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website can store on your device when you visit. They are widely used to make websites work, to remember your preferences, and to collect information about how a site is being used.

Similar technologies, such as local storage, pixels and tracking scripts, do much the same job, and this policy covers those too.

2. What this website currently uses

At the time of writing, the HJ Studio website does not set any cookies of its own. It does not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies or tracking pixels, and there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to.

One thing is worth being open about: this website loads its typefaces from Google Fonts. That does not set a cookie, but it does mean your browser contacts Google's servers, and Google receives your IP address as part of that request.

3. Types of cookies

Strictly necessary cookies

These are needed for a website to function, for example remembering what is in a basket, or keeping someone logged in. They do not require consent, because the site cannot work properly without them.

Analytics cookies

These count visitors and show how people move around a site. They are not strictly necessary, so under UK rules they require your consent before they are set.

Marketing and tracking cookies

These follow visitors across websites to build a profile for advertising. They also require consent, and are generally the most intrusive category.

Third-party cookies

These are set by someone other than the website you are visiting, such as an embedded video, a social media widget or an advertising network. The third party sets its own rules about what it collects.

4. Consent

Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and UK GDPR, any cookie that is not strictly necessary requires your consent before it is placed. Consent must be freely given, specific and informed, and it must be as easy to withdraw as it is to give.

Because this website currently sets no such cookies, no consent is requested.

5. If we add analytics or marketing tools

If we later add anything that is not strictly necessary, we will:

  • update this policy to list what is being set, by whom, and for how long;
  • add a consent banner that asks before those cookies are placed;
  • make sure non-essential cookies are not set unless and until you agree;
  • give you a way to change your mind afterwards.

6. Managing cookies yourself

You can control cookies through your browser settings, by blocking them, deleting them, or being warned before one is set. The exact steps differ by browser. Look for "Privacy", "Cookies" or "Site data" in your settings.

Blocking all cookies will stop some websites from working properly. It will not stop this website from working, because it does not rely on any.

Useful guidance is published by the ICO at ico.org.uk.

7. Websites we build for clients

This policy covers the HJ Studio website only. A website we build for you is yours, and you are responsible for its cookie compliance once it is live, unless we have specifically agreed otherwise in writing. If your site needs analytics, embedded media or a consent banner, tell us during the project and we can include it in the quotation.

8. Changes to this policy

We will update this page whenever what we use changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
